Kingman Kicks Fun Into High Gear with the Route 66 Street Drags

Zuni RV August Route 66 Street Drags

Gentlemen, start your engines! The streets of Kingman, Arizona will be roaring to life this October 22-24 as the Kingman Route 66 Street Drags participants gear up for this unique event that’s fuel-injected with fun! After a hiatus in 2020, the checkered flag is once again ready to drop. Historic Route 66 and Andy Devine Avenue will temporarily close off to allow the 1/8-Mile drag race to tear straight through the middle of downtown Kingman. Drivers of some of the fastest cars to come to Arizona will have the chance to really put the pedal to the metal as they burn rubber on the Mother Road just steps from the conveniently located Zuni Village RV Park.

No Pink Slips Needed

The event, held in cooperation with the City of Kingman and sponsorship from NAPA and NAPA Auto Parts, will register up to 300 vehicles for this historic race. Despite the “drag race” name, which conjures up images of pink slips and flag girls in hot pants for some, this is an organized racing event, complete with city permits, and will observe a “full timing system with reaction times of 60 feet and 330 feet.” Officials will also clock racers’ speeds and times for the one-eighth-mile course. Additionally, organizers have all the safety equipment in place one would expect to see at a standard racing track. Don’t be misled, however. The Kingman Route 66 Street Drags will have all the excitement of a real “street race” as drivers push their cars to the limits to be the first to reach the end of the line.

The Nuts and Bolts

Parking for the event is at the Mohave County Fairgrounds. There you can catch a shuttle ride to Andy Devine Avenue where the street drags will take place. Ticket prices start at $15 each day for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, or you have the option of purchasing a 3-day pass for the discounted price of $40 online. If you’ve got the moxie (and the car), driver and car registration is $130. Starting on Friday, Oct. 22nd at noon three days of drag racing are scheduled and will run until 9pm. Racers will use Friday to fine-tune their cars to ensure the best grip and go on the course. Now, I know we said no hot pants, but there will be a flag drop as seen in historical races.

Racing hours are extended for Saturday, Oct. 23rd, opening at 9am and running all day until 10pm. Each race run will count as a time trial. Once each driver collects two separate time trial scores, the drivers will then be divided into two categories within each class: the “Quick 8,” top eight scorers in each class, will compete for that class championship; all remaining racers will compete in the “Grudge Class.”

Sunday, October 24th is reserved for the finals in both categories. The racing schedule runs from 9am to 4pm. In between final rounds for the “Quick 8,” “Grudge Class” races will run non-stop. This is an exciting competition where racing aficionados can watch their favorite vehicles from different classes go fender-to-fender—viewers can see how a Chevrolet Camaro stacks up against a diesel truck for example. Top racers in each class will take home a custom trophy, a cash prize and, of course, bragging rights.

Don’t get stuck in the pits and miss what promises to be an historic weekend. The Kingman Route 66 Drags could prove to be the largest legal street race ever! So, put yourself and your RV in gear and motor toward Kingman, Arizona and the Zuni Village RV Park where you can always find new and exciting ways to rev up your fun on the open road!
